Despite a drop in automotive sales, the market for the digital displays that go into cars is holding steady and even set to increase rapidly over the next couple of years as more car makers look to using two or more displays in each car, whether these be for driver information or passenger entertainment.
This is leading to the display makers working hard to improve display technology and to make it cheaper. These two trends can be contradictory as can be seen by from the move to using touch screen technology for cars.
Touch Screen Technology
Today, the majority of touch screens used for automotive are of the resistive type. This is relatively inexpensive and scores over alternative surface capacitive and projected capacitive technologies in that the screen can be operated not just by the touch of a finger but also by a gloved hand, nail or pen.
