Precious Plot Summary

Teenage Precious, an African-American girl living in Harlem, has lived through things that would have destroyed other people. Sexually abused by both her parents since the age of 3, she became a mother for the first time at 12, bearing the Down's Syndrome child of her father, and is pregnant by him for the second time. With so much physical, emotional and sexual abuse in her life, it's no surprise that Precious never really learned to read. She's able to mask this in school, but when she's unfairly suspended for her pregnancy, she's also given a second chance at an education through Each One Teach One, an alternative school nearby. Precious makes incredible strides, not only in learning but in her social life, making friends for the first time and beginning to live her life on her own terms. The universe may throw some awful circumstances her way, but Precious doesn't let anything stop her from following her dreams and making a better life for herself and her children.
