There are some plusses and minuses to being in the military. On the plus side, there is honest work to be done in both good and bad economies as well as in times of war and peace. On the minus side, there are long periods of time away from family, living in places in the world that are less than desirable, and the possibility of being exposed to hazardous conditions.
Adding to the plus side of being in the military, or having served, is that military personnel receive a fair amount of tax-free pay. This includes dividend payments on insurance policies from USAA.
